My Dad and I have a tradition to go to Odyssey Dance Theater’s production of Thriller each year. We usually go to the show up at Kingsbury Hall, but this year they had a showing at the new Covey Center For The Arts in Provo. We decided to go to the Provo show and save us the trip up north. This was definitely my most memorable show out of the 5 years I’ve seen it. (Details on that later) The show was still great, but there are a few reasons to go see it at Kingsbury Hall. #1 – The mood up there is different. You have to walk up to an old building through the trees and it’s spooky. #2 – They have the dancers dressed like this:

creeping around and scaring you all the way to your seat. The Covey Center won’t allow this because they get makeup on the carpet. Kingsbury Hall also has carpet…so what’s up with that CC?

Spoiler Alert! If you are planning on attending the show and haven’t seen it before, don’t read on if you don’t want to know details.

#3 – At the CC show, they didn’t have any props on stage! One of my favorite numbers, Curse of the Mummy, usually has an elaborate stage setting of a tomb with a huge Pharaoh head and mummy coffins. You don’t really notice the dancers dressed as mummies standing so still when they are part of the stage setting, but last night, it was just them. They seemed out of place and it wasn’t as cool when they “came to life” and started dancing. This was also true for the Children of the Corn number. Don’t you think this would be much more scary if the scarecrows came jumping out of corn instead of just standing there on stage? (Shhh, don’t tell anyone I was filming…)

Even though there were a few things missing, the dancing was still amazing. As a special surprise (to me at least) Matt Dorame from So You Think You Can Dance is now with the Odyssey company! He had most of the lead roles for the night. He was even more amazing in person than he was on SYTYCD! I also saw online that Thayne Jasperson is also part of the company, but I think he has been for a while. He wasn’t dancing last night.

What makes Thriller really great is they mix comedy in with great dance. You may forget while the Irish dancers are being shot during the River of Blood Dance that they are doing something really hard! Same with Frankenstein and Frankenstein. While the dancers are dressed as Frankenstein and his Bride, they are doing a beautiful ballet!

This year, we took Bug with us. And yes, my Dad also dresses up when we go! :)

We had front row seats. It was a great experience, but I don’t think I would do that again. You can see too many of the “tricks” and things going on backstage. Bug was so excited she could hardly stand it!

During the Salem’s Mass number, the witches cast “spells” and it sets off pyrotechnics on the stage. Well this year, they worked a little too well. We went from this:

to this:

Yep, the fire alarms went off. We had to evacuate and wait for the fire marshal to give everyone the ok to come back in. And it was lightly snowing. See, I told you it was a memorable show!

The funniest part of the night was watching my Dad dressed as some un-dead person dancing around with Bug to “Blue Moon” during the intermission. I love the guy on the left just trying his hardest to ignore them!

It was a great night. Thanks Dad!

By the way, have I mentioned that I LOVE LOVE LOVE my sweet, pink Blackberry Pearl?? It provides me with proof of my memories. Thanks BB for my pics and video!
